Super Smash Bros. Melee is a fighting game featuring crossovers of various Nintendo franchises. It was released on the Nintendo GameCube in 2001, as the sequel to Super Smash Bros. Fox appears as a playable fighter, Falco Lombardi. Two new stages were added, along with with 14 unlockable Star Fox-themed trophies.
Relevance to Star Fox
Fighters
Fox McCloud
- Main article: Fox McCloud#Super Smash Bros. Melee
Fox McCloud, the eponymous protagonist of the Star Fox series, returns from Super Smash Bros. with an updated move set:
- Special Move
- Fox's special move is his Blaster. This attack is known for being able to cover the whole distance of the stage, fires at a extremely fast rate, and is great for racking up damage.
- Side Special
- Fox's side special is Fox Illusion. This move makes Fox move in a single direction at a blinding speed, and is good for being a surprise attack against opponents.
- Up Special
- Fox's up special is Fire Fox. This move is used as his recovery, but can also be used as an attack. His recovery can also be countered with precise timing, but Fox can use this move again if he is hit with an attack.
- Down Special
- Fox's down special is his Reflector. This move is great for reflecting projectiles aimed at Fox, but can shatter if too many items are reflected. This move is also great to use against opponents that are near Fox.
Falco
- Main article: Falco Lombardi#Super Smash Bros. Melee
Falco Lombardi, the ace pilot of Star Fox, is introduced, and shares a similar move set with Fox:
- Special Move
- Falco's special move is his Blaster. This move is different from Fox's in a few ways, as it fires at a slower rate, and stuns any opponent that comes in contact with it.
- Side Special
- Falco's side special move is Falco Phantasm. This move is similar to Fox's, but travels a much shorter distance than his. However, this move is performed faster than Fox's.
- Up Special
- Falco's up special is Fire Bird. This move is incredibly similar to Fox's, with only minor differences. One such is that Falco covers a much smaller distance than Fox, and the opponents can be hit while the move is being charged, unlike Fox whose only hits once the he begins to move.
- Down Special
- Falco's down special is his Reflector. The move is identical to Fox's in many ways, but sends opponents upwards, unlike Fox.
Stages
Two new stages from the Star Fox series are added: Corneria and Venom.

Super Smash Bros. Melee | Fox McCloud is the leader of a band of adventurers-for-hire known as Star Fox. Fox and his fellow pilots Peppy, Slippy, and Falco patrol the Lylat system in their mother ship, the Great Fox. From the cockpit of his Arwing, Fox leads the ceaseless pursuit of the evil scientist Andross, who doomed Fox's father.

Super Smash Bros. Melee | Fox is among the quickest and nimblest of the Smash Bros. characters. His speed is offset by low firepower, however, and he's better at one-on-one fights than melees with multiple foes. His Blaster is unique: it does damage but it doesn't make enemies flinch. His Fox illusion is best used as a surprise attack.

Super Smash Bros. Melee | Fox falls quickly, so he's a tough target to strike from below; however, this advantage can work against him when he goes flying sideways. You can use the Control Stick to set the direction of the Fire Fox technique while it's charging up. On a side note, Fox is also much lighter than he was in the N64 Super Smash Bros. game.

Star Fox team pilot, Falco's constant air of casual indifference belies his precise piloting skills. He avoids discussion of what he did before joining the team, but many consider it likely that his past was filled with reckless behavior. He's not much for cooperation, but he does respect those more skilled than he is.

Where his leader, Fox, has blinding speed, Falco has his own distinct skills and advantages. He has both a higher jump and a longer reach than Fox, and although his Blaster lacks rapid-fire capabilities, it strikes with shocking force. Unlike Fox Falco can stop enemies in their tracks with his Blaster fire.

Falco's amazing jumping abilities have many merits, but it's vital to realize that it comes at the cost of some attack power and defensive strength. He falls at a high speed, which disrupts potential attackers, but this also prevents successful recoveries occasionally. Hit an opponent with Reflector, and he or she will fly straight up; this is Falco's quickest attack.

The Arwing is the symbol of Star Fox. Like an F-Zero racer, it's equipped with an opposing-gravity device. It can barrel roll and flip with ease thanks to its quick acceleration and flexible control. In battle, the ship uses retractable wings for precise flying. Every Arwing has smart bombs as its sub-weapons.

Slippy Toad is the mechanical genius behind most of the Star Fox team's new weapons and technology, and just lately he's been spending the bulk of his time in Research and Development. He's also a competent pilot, but his enthusiasm tends to outweigh his technical flight skills. He and Fox have been friends ever since their school days. Star Fox 09/93 |
