A barrel roll is a technique where the Arwing spins with a force making the G-diffuser inhale, so more items will come toward you, or it can be used to deflect certain enemy blasts. One of Peppy's phrases, "Do a barrel roll!" has become a popular internet sensation. In Star Fox, Star Fox 2, Star Fox 64, Assault, Adventures, and 64 3D, this maneuver is executed by tapping either of the shoulder buttons twice. In 64 and Assault, Barrel Rolls make the player turn or move faster if the roll is in the same direction as the ship's movement. Doing so is the only way to avoid one of Andross' attacks in both 64 and Assault. In Command, however, the player must make a circular movement on the touch screen to activate it. Barrel rolls only deflect basic laser-based attacks, as Smart Bombs, Predator Rockets, and rainbow beams from Gorgon aren't deflected.

November 18, 2011 - Have you been using Google lately? Of course, it is very, very unlikely anyone browsing on the internet would not ever use the ever-popular Google search engine. Anyway, why am I asking you if you had been using Google? Well, recently Google implemented something that could be considered a tribute to the Star Fox series. A sort of Easter egg, if you will. I shall not say any more about it, but you can easily find out yourself. I highly suggest you use the Google Chrome browser for this process though, as it may not work on just any platform. Log on Google's main page, and type in Peppy Hare's famous words, "Do a barrel roll." You will then see what happens exactly.

"Do a barrel roll!"
— Peppy Hare, Star Fox 64

A barrel roll is an aerial maneuver where a starfighter spins to deflect fiery or basic laser attacks from a Smart Bomb or Predator Rocket. This technique is featured in every Star Fox game.

Summary

In Star Fox 64 and Star Fox: Assault, barrel rolls make the player turn or move faster if it is in the same direction as the ship's movement. This is the only way to avoid one of Andross's attacks in both games. It cannot deflect rainbow beams from the Gorgon.

In Star Fox Command, the player can activate a barrel roll by drawing a circle on the Touch Screen. making a circular movement on the touch screen. The move continues up up the Boost Gauge runs out. The player can cancel it early by tapping the Touch Screen again.

The Arwing cannot perform a barrel roll and instead utilizes the related aileron roll technique. The only exception is in Star Fox: Assault, where the Arwing's G-Diffuser creates a gravitational field allowing it to collect items easily.
